Bitcoin is the first digital currency, created in 2009 by a software developer Satoshi Nakamoto. His true identity was not revealed until now, but this person proposed a new approach to financial transactions in his famous whitepaper, titled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System”. Bitcoin is an algorithm, a piece of code, which can be used to make peer-to-peer payments, without a central authority being involved. This idea of “electronic cash” became very popular and hundreds of other cryptocurrencies, generically called “Altcoins”, appeared after bitcoin. Maximum number of potential bitcoins is limited to 21 million and approximately 17 million of them were already mined and put in circulation.
